On the 27th of Febuary, it will be Dominican Republic's independance day.
I wanted to educate you guys with a brief histoy of this beautiful country, with its beautiful people, and beaches. ( agreat tourist attraction, learn more at DominicanRepublic.com)
So heres the thing, while searching for a new trade route to the country of India, Christopher Columbus, not only stumbled upon the Americas, in the carribean sea, he came upon a few Islands, of which one was called Quisqueya, which means mother of all lands, and Ayiti, land of high mountains. Today known as the Island of Hispañola, which is split between Dominican Republic and Haití.
In 1655, the west end of the Island (Haití

was taken over by the French...I'm not kidding...They took over more than half the Island. and around the beginning of the 1800's, the Hatians told the French to take over the other side of the island. When they tried this, they were overwhelmed by the Domincan people's power, and obviously lost, then proceeded to their signature move, Lé Rétråsó, which we all know as, The Retreat, and that is how on Febuary 27th 1844, Dominican Republic became the Awesome country it is today, and yes, a lot of people like to poke fun and say Dominican Republic has to share the island with the Hatians, thats because we're humane, we couldn't get rid of them, just like the US will never be able to get rid of Mexicans.
Note*
Although some of the above does contain facts, the rest is purely from imagination, since I don't remember much about the 6th grade, which is where I learned this while in school in Dominican Republic.
